Greg Soros runs Podcraft Media Lab out of a converted garage studio on Austin’s East Side, and it’s there that he has drawn a clear boundary between what machines should handle in podcasting and what belongs to people. That boundary took shape over years of work. At Podcraft, machine learning now manages transcription, first-pass audio cleanup, and metadata organization, work that used to slow down every episode before real editing even began. Greg Soros has said that shift trimmed production timelines by close to 35 percent, time his team reinvests in sound design and story structure.

He’s skeptical, though, of producers who go further and hand over the entire process. “The magic of podcasting lies in those subtle human moments,” Soros has explained, pointing to unscripted laughter and pauses as the details that keep a show from feeling sterile. Algorithms, in his view, can sort data on ad placement and audience engagement, but they can’t manufacture that kind of authenticity.

A Studio Built on That Distinction

The approach has held up commercially. Client retention at Podcraft sits above 95 percent, and referrals account for roughly 40 percent of new business, numbers Soros treats as validation of his garage-studio rulebook. Several shows made under his supervision have also earned industry recognition.
